This movie takes place in Hawaii. Henry Roth is portayed as a womanizing-fufill their "vacation fling fantasy" then they leave no strings attached. He is a marine life veterinarian.
One day in the local cafe called the "Huki Lau Cafe" Henry meets a local art teacher named Lucy Whitmore. They hit it off and agree to meet the next day at the cafe. However the next day when they meet Lucy claims she had never even met him. Confused the cafe owner who is a good friend of Lucy's and Lucy's late mother tells Henry that Lucy was in a severe car crash a year ago and suffered a brain injury which causes her not to retain any new memories and Lucy believes that it is the same day every day (which happens to be her fathers birthday) and does the same routine everyday her memory is wiped clean when she sleeps. In a montage it shows what her father Marlin and her brother Doug go through every night to "proctect" her. (such as rewrapping Marlin's birthday present from Lucy, they have the several newspapers from the day of her accident, re-baking the birthday cake, etc..)
Determined not to let memory loss keep Lucy from falling in love with him, Henry devises several "ways" to meet Lucy and this is shown to be somewhat sucessful. One day Lucy is at the Huki Lau cafe (as she always is) she sees a poiceman writing her a ticket for expired tabs and she argues that is the day she thinks it is (which is the day of the accident) When she grabs a current newpaper from a bystander to "show" the policeman that it's day she is is shocked and confused by the date on the newpaper and rushes home.
Once at home Marlin shows Lucy everything that Doug and him do every night. Upset and needing answers Lucy, Henry, Marlin, and Doug drive out to talk to the doctor that treated her after the accident where Lucy finally comes to the realization that she's probably not going to get better but is comforted by her father, Henry, and Dougs support.
Henry decides that it's better to tell the truth to Lucy each day about her memory loss than hide it from her and decides to make a video tape for Lucy for her to watch each day with events that she can't remember. Henry and Lucy start falling in love.
One morning after having slept together Lucy wakes up and screams because she doesn't know who Henry is and confused. A few minutes later it is shown Doug, Marlin, Henry, and Dr. Keats chatting about Henry's plan to go out to sea to do some research that had taken a couple of years to prepare for. Henry says that he has decided not to go because he feels Lucy needs him. Lucy in the other room (appearently had been watching the video) is shown overhearing the conversation and feels guilty that Henry wants to give up on his dream.
Later that day Lucy meets Henry at the aquarium where Henry works and she tell him that she can't be the reason he's going to give up his dream and breaks up with him and tells him that she is going to destroy all evidence of him and their relationship.
Now out of Lucy's life Henry prepares for his trip the day of depture Marlin gives Henry a CD of beach boys songs. Hearing a particular song he remembers something that Marlin had said earlier that she sings this particular song on days that she "meets" Henry. It is implied that maybe Lucy does remember him after all and rushes back home to her. At the hospital where Lucy had checked herself in (as to not be a burden to her dad and brother anymore) Henry asks Lucy if she remembers him at all, she says no, but shows him a room with a bunch of her paintings and there are several pictures of him, where she explains that she has been dreaming about him.
This movie is cute and I love Drew Barrymoore and Adam Sandler's chemistry! There are some parts that are cheesy parts to this movie but it is so cute.
Rated PG-13
